Agents Will Now Be Voting for the Oscars

Image
https://ift.tt/2YIOWga For the first time in Academy Awards history, talent agents will be able to vote in the Oscars. On June 28, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors voted to define talent agents as "Members-at-Large," granting them voting privileges at the Oscars. The Academy has 17 branches, including actors, crafts, documentaries, directors, and writers. There are two membership status categories, Members-at-Large and Associates. Agents were previously classified as Associates and barred from voting, because their work was traditionally viewed as a less direct aspect of the movie-making process, more concerned with the brokering of deals than creating the films. There are currently 111 agents in AMPAS who will be granted Members-at-Large status and voting rights. It's possible more agents will be invited to join this Tuesday, when the Academy releases its list of new 2020 members. Read More https://ift.tt/3ihfzR4

Frankly, Hollywood Doesn't Give a Damn About 'Black Lives Matter'

https://ift.tt/2AdVMRt Force of Nature comes out tomorrow. The question is WHY?! There are a lot of questions we have about Force of Nature . Namely why it was released now and who is responsible. The search for answers leads to some inconvenient truths about the entertainment industry. But let's get one thing out of the way first: I'm not advocating for censorship. American cinema is littered with important examples of filmmaking that are critical to the medium's development, and also extremely dated in their world views. Read More https://ift.tt/2CTRdgh

How this Feature Shot Without Story and on a Micro-Budget

Image
https://ift.tt/3ib14OS An inspiring look at the micro-budget film Ham on Rye . The first half of 2020 may be a sparse of cinema, but it's not without its hidden gems. Ham on Rye is the debut feature from writer-director Tyler Taormina. It tells the story of an indescribable panorama where a group of teenagers gather at a deli for a traditional courting ritual. The film exists without a particular era or setting, somewhere in the haze of postwar suburban America. It’s arresting in it’s simplicity, yet awe-inspiring in scope. Despite all this, it’s also an approachable piece of pop art—and shot for less than $30,000. A narrative film that eschews convention entirely is always a hard sell, but Taormina and his DP-producer Carson Lund were both compelled to work in this unique format. Their approach to storytelling is what you might call an “ecosystem film” or a work of “narrative pointillism" – guiding the viewer through a tapestry of details rather than a story. Filmmakers li...
