Fiona's insurance bill could hit $700M — but most damage won't be covered - CBC News

Image
Hurricane Fiona is well on its way to being the costliest storm to ever hit Atlantic Canada — and most of its financial toll won't be covered by insurance. Analysts at DBRS Morningstar estimate that the storm, which ripped through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Eastern Quebec last weekend, caused between $300 million and $700 million worth of insured losses to the local economy. But that figure is nowhere close to the true cost of the storm, because gaps in the insurance system make it so that most of the damage won't be covered. While most residential home and property insurance policies typically cover damages from things like strong winds, downed trees and water damage caused from leaky roofs, that isn't the case for the type of flooding caused by storm surges — which were a huge part of Fiona's wrath. "Sea surge is not covered in most cases," said Marcos Alvarez, the global head of insurance with DBRS Morningstar. &q

As of Wednesday morning, about 57,000 Maritime Electric customers were still in the dark — with power restored to only about 26,000 customers on day five of the outage. With crews about to return to work Wednesday morning, spokesperson Kim Griffin said things are particularly bad in the eastern part of the province. "We do not have all the essential services on. That's certainly something that our crews are focusing on," said Griffin. "They worked until about midnight last night, many of them, before they timed out, and expect to be on the road maybe 6:30, 7, this morning." From endangered Sakinaw sockeye salmon to threatened Interior Fraser coho, about half of Pacific salmon populations are in some state of decline, according to the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). On the Fraser River, sockeye returns sunk to 293,000 fish in 2020, the lowest since record-keeping began in 1893. This year was supposed to be different. As a dominant year for the iconic salmon species, the Pacific Salmon Commission initially forecast nearly 9.8 million Fraser sockeye would return in 2022. And while that’s since been downgraded to 6.7 million fish, the spectacle of millions of individual salmon fighting the flow of B.C.’s biggest river will go on. Ending their life at sea, salmon use their incredible keen sense of smell to trace the chemical signature of their home stream. As Pacific salmon return to their natal creeks, streams an

Nitish's 'CM' slip-up for Tejashwi triggers a BJP jab, RJD hug - The Indian Express

A purported slip of tongue from Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar , addressing his deputy Tejashwi Prasad Yadav as “mukhyamantri” at an event here, became the source of taunts and counters among BJP and ruling allies JD(U) and RJD on Tuesday. The BJP took a dig at the Chief Minister, saying it’s time for Nitish to “go to ashram”. The allies used the “slip-up” to flaunt their growing bond. Introducing other leaders on the dais at an Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department event to hand over appointment letters to those selected as veterinary and district fisheries officers, Nitish called his deputy “mananiya mukhyamantri (honourable chief minister) Tejashwi Prasad Yadav”. Nitish did not correct his “slip of tongue” and went ahead with the speech. Not letting the slip-up opportunity slip, BJP spokesperson Nikhil Anand said, “It appears Nitish Kumar has consciously or subconsciously accepted Tejashwi as CM. It is really time for Nitish Kumar to go to (an) ashram.” Subscriber Only
