Teen Being Charged as Adult With Attempted Murder for School Shooting
A teenager is facing an attempted murder charge after authorities say he’s a suspect in the shooting of another student at his Maryland high school, per the Associated Press.
Steven Alston Jr., a 17-year-old student at Magruder High School in Rockville and suspect in the Friday shooting, is facing charges as an adult, according to the Montgomery County police.
He’s also being charged with first-degree assault and three weapons-related counts. The charges come after a 15-year-old male student was found in a school bathroom with a gunshot wound. The victim is currently in critical condition after undergoing surgery.
A motive for the shooting has not yet been identified.
The AP reports that information about Alston’s case was not available on an online database, and that the State’s Attorney’s Office did not immediately respond with information when requested.
The school has 1,700 students enrolled, and students were dismissed Friday following a lockdown for a few hours. There is reportedly no evidence that the suspect was targeting other students.
