A Welsh man set a new Guinness World Record for most pubs visited by a single individual in a span of 24 hours.

On Feb. 5, Gareth Murphy drank at 56 different pubs in Cardiff City Centre, breaking the previous record held by Matt Ellis from England just last year. Murphy consumed 8.6 pints of orange juice, five pints of apple juice, 1.8 pints of beer, and less than a pint of Diet Pepsi, Guinness, lemonade, and more.

Murphy said the amount of pubs in Cardiff City Centre motivated him to try and break Ellis’ record. The one-half square mile area has over 300 licensed pubs, bars and clubs. “For the purposes of this record, a pub is defined as an establishment licensed to sell alcoholic beverages on the premises, although the challenger is not required to consume any alcohol,” Guinness said of the rules.

In preparation for the record-breaking pub crawl, Murphy mapped out a route but his plan quickly fell apart when some establishments were “unexpectedly closed or opening later.” His journey started at 10 a.m. with a glass of lemonade and by 8 p.m., he tied Ellis’ record. Murphy visited five more pubs before calling it a night and a new record at 9:26 p.m.

“It was a long, tiring day. The hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Murphy said.
