At home ministry's Chintan Shivir, PM Modi bats for 'One Nation, One Uniform' for police - The Indian Express
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the first Chintan Shivir (brainstorming session) of state home ministers and top police officers, pitched the idea of a single uniform for police forces across the country on Friday.
“The ‘One Nation, One Uniform’ for police is just an idea. I am not trying to impose it on you. Just give it a thought. It may happen, it may happen in 5, 50 or 100 years. All the states should just think it over,” the prime minister said, adding that he believed the identity of police across the country should be the same.
“There is one important issue for our nation. Currently in our country, there is a ‘one nation, one ration’ card; ‘one nation, one mobility’ card; ‘one nation, one grid’ and a ‘one nation, one sign language’. Just like this, all the states should think of a ‘one nation, one uniform’ policy. It will also provide profit and also will give a common identity to law enforcement as citizens will recognise police personnel anywhere in the country. Just like there is a post box that has a distinct identity, police uniforms should be identifiable uniformly across the country,” Modi said via videoconferencing.
“I am just putting forward this as a thought for your consideration. It will provide more help and states can have their number or insignia. It may happen, it may happen in 5, 50, or 100 years. All the states should just think over it,” he said.
Reiterating the need to obliterate the ground network of terrorism, Modi remarked that every government in its own capacity and understanding is trying to do its part. “It is the need of the hour to come together as one and handle the situation. Every form of Naxalism, be it the one with guns or the one with pens, has to be uprooted to prevent them from misleading the youth of the country,” he said.

Modi said such forces were increasing their intellectual sphere to pervert the minds of coming generations. “For the sake of the unity and integrity of the nation and with the inspiration of Sardar Patel, we cannot allow any such forces to flourish in our country. Such forces get significant help internationally,” he added.
In the past eight years, the number of Naxal-affected districts in the country has come down significantly, Modi said. “Be it Jammu and Kashmir or Northeast, today we are moving fast towards permanent peace. Now we have to focus on rapid development in all these sectors including infrastructure,” he added.
Asking for close cooperation among states to tackle crimes and criminals, he said, “Law and order is not restricted to one state now. Crime is turning interstate and also international. With technology, criminals now have the power to commit crimes from beyond our borders. As such, coordination between agencies of all states and the Centre is crucial.”

On Thursday, delivering the inaugural address, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that at a time when crimes have become “borderless” and many trans-border laws have been enacted, states must come together to fight crime. “It is our collective responsibility that we combat crimes together, beyond national, state or regional boundaries,” he said.
A will to strongly handle corruption, terrorism and hawala is clear in the laws enacted by the central government, according to Modi. “Laws like the UAPA have given strength to the system in a decisive battle against terrorism,” he said.

Talking about social media, Modi said a single piece of fake news has the capability to snowball into a matter of national concern. “During the reservation issue, we saw the kind of fake news that was spread and the subsequent violence. Though things got cleared after 5-6 hours, till that time, we also faced loss. There is a need to educate people about analysing and verifying any piece of information from 10 sources before forwarding it to people. We have to come up with technological advancement to prevent the spreading of fake news,” he added.
