Gulmarg: Two Polish skiers killed in avalanche - The Indian Express
Two Polish skiers were killed when a massive avalanche hit the upper reaches of the Gulmarg ski resort in Kashmir Wednesday. They were part of a group of 21 foreign tourists skiing down the slopes of Affarwat peak. While the police and rescue teams managed to safely pull out 19 skiers and their two local guides, the bodies of Krzysctof and Adam Grzech were retrieved from under a mound of snow.
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) had warned of a possible avalanche in ranges above 1,800 to 2,400 metres in Bandipore, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Kupwara, Kulgam, Poonch and Reasi districts. The Affarwat peak falls in the Baramulla at a height of around 4,000 metres.
“Three teams went for skiing. Around 12.30 pm, a massive avalanche hit Hapatkhud Kongdoori where these teams got trapped,” J&K Police tweeted.
Wednesday’s avalanche is the fifth in the Valley this winter. While two avalanches hit Gurez, two hit Sonamarg earlier. In one of the avalanches at Sonamarg, two labourers working on the Zojilla tunnel – that is going go connect Kashmir Valley and Kargil in Ladakh – were killed. All these avalanches were captured on camera.
